View Full Version : emissions too high for mot
ello people,
i took my motor for the mot and it failed on co emissions, so i had it put on a machine and the guy said it was the cat as there was no sensor faults coming up.
so i put a new(damn expensive) cat on it aswell as a new cts and it had a co2 sensor about 2 months ago. so i take it back for the retest and it failed again:17:
the readings were 0.64 the first time i took it, and 0.61 on the retest.
it's had a new air filter and i chucked half a bottle of redex in it before thrashing it around for 40 miles before the retest.
what else should i be looking for that could affect the emissions?
would a dodgy afm be the problem?
cheers
dave

If a vehicle fails for high CO at idle and /or fast idle then.... if Lambda is too low, the mixture is too rich. This can be caused either by a misfire or by a faulty Lambda sensor. If it's running very rich, the 02 and HC will be higher than normal.
if it has a high Lambda and high 02 (0.5 to 1.5%), the "CAT" could be faulty. Before condemning it make sure its hot enough to work, the Lambda and other sensors are working OK and the exhaust downpipe hasn't got any leaks.
if the vehicle fails for high HC then ...if the CO passes, the vehicle is probably misfiring. Or if the CO fails and the Lambda reading is too low, the mixture is probably too rich and it may also be misfiring.
if the CO fails, the Lambda reading is high and the O2 reading is high (0.5 to 1.5%) the "CAT" could be faulty. Again check out the simple measures above before condemning it.
if the Lambda fails then...if its too high the Lambda sensor may be faulty, the mixture may be too weak or there may be a hole in the exhaust downpipe. If Lambda is too low the sensor may be faulty, the mixture may be rich or the vehicle may be misfiring.
it passed the lambda test and it was a new one about 2 months ago(£68:mad: )
i've got to get it sorted, i miss my car and it's only been off the road since tuesday.
will new plugs make a difference d'ya reckon?
i have checked for any exhaust blows as i know that can affect it, none that i can feel.

What's it like on fuel?
How many miles has it done?
Has it been well maintained?
it does about 170 miles on £20 which i think is good.
just turned 980000
i changed the oil/filter, air filter not long ago and it had new plugs in march.

take the engine numbers off take to another mot station and if the number unreadable they dont have to test emissions
really:eek: i didn't know that.
anybody know of any mot stations that will turn a blind eye to the emissions;)

What engine has your car got in ... have known it to be the knock sensor on some engines but normally a fault code is stored in the ecu

It's the 1.8 16v iirc
correct, c18xel(the slower eco, lol) i might be getting this sorted soon as a mate of a workmate is an mot tester and he reckons he'll get it through.
i think he's blind in one eye;)
