was out tonight for a while in the car to go watch fireworks with milz, first proper run for the car since service and mot at the weekend. Had been out for a couple of hours and the car was running fine, we parked up and i had left the engine running to keep warm and my battery light came on. Was quite worried about it so decided to head home incase we got stuck. Alan said the alternator seemed a little noisy.

Took it easy driving the 60 miles home, battery light glows brighter when revs are high and at points the light went off then back on again. The gauges (speedo, rev counter, temp and petrol) seemed to fail and all drop to zero but all the lights stayed on with no loss of power and then come straight back on again. Fastest my car has ever went from 0-70 lol wasnt funny at the time, got quite stressed out but am fine now im home.

the battery is only about a year old. Got an upgraded one with a 4 year guarantee not long after i got the car as the old one was a bit crap.

feeling a bit poo about it considering the amount of cash its bled me dry for over last wee while! Had to happen with xmas just round the corner boooo!

good news is the alternator SHOULD be the same as most cavs and 4pot vectras and astras so shouldnt be to difficult to get one , there not to hard to fit either

hoep you get it sorted mate. It sounds like an alternator problem as I have had similar before with my 4x4 and my lickle astra :D. The stuff for the astra was cheap as chips .... the 4x4 not so much so :( you should be fine :D

had exactly the same on an old mk2 astra i had. Alternator over-charging or shorting out somewhere. Best check for chaffing wires from the alternator to battery (and don't forget to check the condition of the wires going into the plug on the back of the alternator).

Probably right mate however thats the bit that'll be knackered imo, as I've had exactly the same troubles with them before on older cars

im not 100% but i dont think you can buy seperate units anymore, and i think its the same for the rectifier pack as well.

soldiered on and checked it with my broken thumb :(

alternator is puttin out nearly 17v so voltage regulator is pumped.
