Just a question.

Just took a 1.8 engine out of my astra, I've posted pics of it before.

I decided to take it off the road and make a project out of it.

As for now its sittin with axel stands and no engine, I brought a 2 redtop's off ebay, But I'm rubbish with wiring. I noticed the gearbox linkage is different from the 8v to the 16v, the 16v is in a Z shape, where the linkage from the gearstick connects to the engine, The 8v is slightly different. How hard do you think its going 2 be to get it 2 fit?

I also noticed the 16v has a balancing shaft, where the 8v doesn't so I need a 16v drive shaft.

I have the wireloom for the 16v just not sure how im going 2 fit it. I'm willing to pay for some one 2 fit it for me.

Should be good fun when its finished.

Willl post pics tomorrow :)

Any comments appreciated.

What mark astra is it?

If its a mk2 the gear box should be an F16 if so i'd keep it and not bother swapping therefore no need to worry about the gear linkage. The 16v gear linkage goes under the buklhead and the 8v through the bulkhead I think.....or the other way round lol

Drive shafts wouldn't be a problem either just stick with the 8v ones

I had the above done to my mk2 CDi astra :D

yeah its the mk2. I need the 16v driveshaft to compensate for the balancing shaft which is attatched to the engine. I'm gunna keep the f20 gearbox on, the f16 doesn't seem 2 good. Yeah the 8v goes through the bulkhead, so what shall i do? get a gearstick and linkage from a 16v? maybe a cav or something.

Whats wrong with the F16?

You need to use the gear linkage from the F16 and 1.8 engine and it should mate up fine with the F20 and XE, no need to change the gearstick :D

The linkage will match up fine as per original. The 16v has a different floorpan for the linkage and its quite alot of agro to modify the 8v set-up. Wiring is pretty straight forward if you have a mk2 16v loom. 16v GTE's had the same shafts as an 8v, only Cav's, Calibra's and maybe (not totally sure) mk3 Astra's have the equal length shafts

Ok today I changed the Linkage on top of the Gearbox, This resolves my problem with the linkage which travels through the bulkhead. Does this matter that I've changed it? They are edzactly the same on both engines I've just eliminated the use of the pivot for the 16v gearbox which is not needed.

didnt need to remove the linkage casing tho bud can do it simply by removing the pin to the link on the little shaft
how far is nuneaton from stoke? need to come down and have look at this wiring as well
