View Full Version : Likelyhood of CV Joint Circlip 'Disappearing' on it's own?!

Took Em's Rover 218D in today to have the N/S CV Joint replaced (Too wet and cold outside to do it myself before you ask lol)

Dropped it off around midday.

4pm chap phones me saying that he's having to order a whole new D'shaft for it as the Circlip is missing so he cannot fit the new CVJ

As you know I'm hardly an amateur when it comes to cars, so who agrees with me that he's just lost it himself?!

the circlips are a massive pain in the ass to remove so i cant imagine one just "going missing"

oh and hang on a min u do not need to replace the whole driveshaft!!! clips iirc come with the replacement cvj,at most if needed you can buy circlips at most sizes for about 60p
dont let that fool shaft you (pardon the pun) he is spinning you a yarn

Well so it continues!

Phoned the lad up this morning, asked him why he can't just buy a new circlip..

''..Nowhere selling them for the car..''

Ok what if I go find a second hand shaft locally and use the clip of that?

''..Worth a look if you want, but we close in an hour..''

Dan and I scoured the local yards to no avail really! Took up a shaft from a Subaru that the guy at Dingle Hall gave us for him to try the clips off that so took that to them about 15mins before they closed for the weekend..

So end of the saga today = car is in bits at the garage until Wednesday at least! (Emma not pleased :o)

rhyd the chances are the bloke has tried to fit the new joint and the old clip hasnt been sitting properly on the shaft as its a loose fit on the shaft (tho not loose enough to fall off). it sits in a groove and wont sit central on the shaft. i recon he has tried to force it on with a hammer and bent the circlip beyond the point of reshaping and now he is spinning you a load of bull.

my work was a rover garage for the first 7 years i worked there and i used to see apprentices doing this daily. when you go to fit the cv joint you need to push it onto the shaft till it touches the circlip then get a pokey screwdriver and centralise the clip before TAPPING the joint home. if you need to force the shaft on the clip aint sitting right.

also as was said before you dont need to replace the full shaft for the sake of a clip, my work still manages to get rover parts no problem and can still get the clips.

if you can make any sense of that then i hope it will help.

Yeah changed enough CVJ's so that all makes complete sense mate, he's telling me he can't find anywhere (that they order from) that has any suitable circlips so is having to order a complete shaft (with circlips)

Totally spinning me a load of bull**** I know, but not much I can do as they won't release the car from there as it's ''..unsafe to drive..'' company policy bull****. Dan and I tried getting it from there on friday with no avail..

Unfortunately I've not managed to source a circlip for it either all motor factors in town just say 'don't stock them'.

*******s..

Having said all that if I'd have done it myself I'd have probably hammered it home too as I normally do and not poke around/line it up first..:o

Cheers for the info though Alan

right update.

Rhyd phoned our localish old rover dealer and asked them did they have any circlips in stock and told them what had happened. they said that no way would the car ever be driveable without the clip and the bloke was pulling a fast one. they then told him that the clip should come in with a cv boot or summat and to phone our local parts place to see if they had any.

So rhyd does this only to be laughed at for making such a stupid request and that if the clip is missing we need a new drive shaft. rhyd then phones the garage where the car is to tell them not to do anything with the car as he will try again today to find a clip from the breakers or somewhere, only to be told tough by the bloke as the car was on the ramp with the new drive shaft being fitted at that moment. (rhyd fuming by now lol) so we leave it at that.

bloke phones my mum this afternoon whilst we were shopping to say car ready to be picked up but it is illegal to drive as it needs 2 new tyres on the back, (do we want him to fit them LIKE HELL WE DO) mum being mum had a go at the bloke and told him that she is not happy with whats gone on and that we have spoken to other garages who have all said that the car would not be driveable without the clip so you have lost the clip and we want some money off the bill as this is all his fault. bloke said there is no way we are pinning that on him and that the clip was missing and yes the car would not be driveable without the clip. So mum made the stupid little jumped up prat look stupid because she said "well the car drove to the garage so explain that" Rhyd went down with his mum to collect the car and pay the ridiculous bill and right in front of the bloke his mum said to take it to ats to get the tyres and that there is no way any of us are going there again. So between my family and rhyds family and me and rhyd they have lost out on servicing about 10 cars the robbing b******s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pllusy

so they fitted a new shaft then? if i remember right they were told to hang fire and not fit anything to the car? if thats the case then you should not have to pay the bill as you have not given them authorisation to replace anything on your car. only if you told them to replace a part are you liable for the bill.

Report them to watchdog and trading standards.

Are they a chain of garages or just a one off place? Was thinking to call and speak to the manager?! oh sorry shout at the manager

Bill paid - no way we're going there again, my brother had a similar hassle with them earlier on in the year when he took his Civic VTi in for tracking, ended up having to have new wheel bearing and balljoints and something done to his exhaust..

He's banned from there now I think for being abusive to the manager lmao :D

ATS Tomorrow for some new tyres for it anyway
