Sure dan won't mind me asking on his behalf..

His Astra has developed a noticeable stutter at low speeds, will rev through though and no loss of power when accelerating, however at low speeds it's like an odd missfire and from a standing start it will almost stall if not revved enough.

Idles fine though.

Has not long had new sparks fitted.

EM light not on.

Only think I noticed was temp guage showing 80-82 C even after very long drive at speed the other night which seems a bit low to me as thats about 1/4 the way up the temp guage

We've not had chance to look at it yet, just thought I'd post another thread to keep this place busy ;)

idle stepping motor sounds like the culprit is there a ticking noise at all?

:cool:sounds like sticking valves the 1.6 16v's were very common for this very sligth missfire!

needs valves regrindin in me thinks but could be wrong!

my temp gauge has been pretty low all winter, i recon its just the cold weather as when i stop the temp comes back up pretty quickly. as long as he is getting heat from the heaters and the coolant level is ok i wouldnt worry about the reading of the gauge.

as for the stutter i would be more inclined to check the idle control solenoid/stepper motor/idle bypass valve same thing just depends what you want to call it. check that and the vac pipes for blockages or splits.

i would try that before going down the valves route, not saying its not going o be valves but try the simple things first.
