Under the bonnet of my car earlier trying to trace weird noise, Thought I was in big trouble, thought noise was deep in the engine, Seems its coming from the Idle speed stepper motor, If i cover the orifice slightly, the noise stops ( b4 the engine cuts out) Any body come across this b4 ( its a 2litre ecotek)

sounds like an air leak, not 100%. If its something to do with the idle speed gubbins its usually due to an air leak. Spray some water with some fairy in and round it. If it bubbles or gets sucked in then air leakage be the problem

put a new idle speed motor on today, cured the erratic tickover but not the noise, performance not affected but will have to look deeper. agree with air leak suggestions but any other ideas welcome.

When was the last oil change? And what grade was used?
We had similar problem with Dan's Astra SXi a while back, did a lot of fault finding, to discover nothing wrong with it.
Changed the oil for Castrol GTX Magnatec 10W-40 and not heard the noise since..

Mates still does this noise,
Changed oil used vauxhall oil.
So he took it to Vauxhall at Crewe and they told him it would £250 to fix the problem. But wouldn't tell him what was causing it due to people using the free quote to fix there own cars.
huh ...

when i had me paintwork done at car care in stoke ( as recomended by Hebs (cdixe) he said it sounded like a dodgy inlet valve but ruled it out because the car is performing well, unlike me. Re vauxhall wanting £250 but not telling, why am I not surprised.

I wouldn't describe this as a tapping mate, its an induction noise but not a normal one, am toying with the idea of putting a standard airbox back on to see if that makes a difference, Also the throttle body is coming off to check the gasket.

By the symtoms you describe mate, and the fact that an oil change cured it, i wonder if Dans problem was a hydraulic follower problem? Of course that only applies if the SXI has hydraulic followers and not mechanical. :33:
